Lesson 14

Dear Teni,
Thank you for your fourteenth message. My comments and corrections follow.
Sincerely,
Prof. Sue Garreis

Dear Prof. Susan Garreis
Hello
Thank you for your reply and your corrections.
I did. She said thanks.
-> Thank you.
Thank you very much for your good wishes. I texted her on the phone while I am writing this response. She said thanks for the good wishes.
-> 1 week has passed. Her hands ok?
> Her hand is much better. She is back to work. She wears a light bandage until the stitches come out. Thank you for asking.
That is correct. I don't have carpal tunnel because I have not keyboarded as much as she as. My sister also had carpal tunnel, but she has keyboarded for the last thirty years. Stirring batter is a two-handed job. One hand stirs with the spoon while the other holds the bowl still. It requires some force being applied with both wrists.
-> Thank you, I had imagined.

Oh, my goodness! They did taste delicious!
-> If I have a chance, I want to try it.

It is a happy thing to see family members that you love.
-> Yes, That is definitely 100%.

Absolutely! We did not see any, but the trees were lovely.
-> Old barns add beauty to the landscape.

Beautiful!
-> Thank you.
What an amazing harvest! Beautiful pictures!
-> Thank you.

It looks like a time for food, family and fireworks. The parades must be spectacular. I guess you are too old to receive the red envelopes from your elders now. Do you remember receiving them as a child?
-> Exactly, it is a time for family and food.

I still get red envelopes. Because in their eyes, I am child. It is not a lot of money, it is lucky money.
> How wonderful that you still get the red envelopes!

It is sixty degrees Fahrenheit (fifteen degrees Celsius) in the daytime. Tonight it will be 36 degrees Fahrenheit (two degrees Celsius)!
-> It is so cold.
> Compared to Vietnam, yes. But it is mild for us now. This is the best time of year. The cold comes in December, January, February and sometimes March.

I love the sounds of the night. I like to see the stars and the moon. I can hear the sound of trucks driving on a main road not too far away from the house. At night the sound travels easily. It is not noticeable in the daytime, even though traffic is much heavier. Finally, I love waking up to the sound of birds, even if I hear the alarm first.
-> Wow! How romantic!
> Yes, it is wonderful and most enjoyable.

Have you ever gone camping? (sleeping outside in a tent)
-> I went camping a lot. All the trips were organized by my school or university.
> Great! Schools here in the US do not usually organize overnight trips for the students. If they do, the students stay overnight in a hotel. I hope you had great experiences on your school trips.

With best wishes
Nguyen Hung Thien

Attached is the next lesson.
It is a summary of the whole year.
It is election time in the US.
People eighteen or older can register to vote.
Every two years we have elections. .
Election day is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
Some states let people vote for several days before that.
It is called "early voting." Maryland has early voting. I voted already.
Here is a link on election day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_Day_(United_States)
When can you vote in national or local elections in Vietnam?
